When we were young(er) we curised in a stinkpot (working stiff) with 2 kids and a german shepherd. We discovered many of the same things you did - on a much smaller scale. One of the things that worked for us for going thru locks on the Champlain canal w s to stuff 2 burlap bags with hay on one end of the canal, use them for fenders against the really slimy lock walls, and then dump the nice, clean, biodegradable mulch at the other end. I do enjoy your writing, pictures and the tide program, which I use in the Florida Keys with great regularity. Will you be down this way again?

Really interesting site. I am enthusiastic about anything to do with boats (all kinds) but am most interested in sail boats, mine is a modest Catalina 34 #580 (1988)which I live aboard and enjoy very much, in Southern California. Thanks for the interset ng place to visit, it was expected by association with Latitude 38.

Thanks for the tide program, at first glance it looks GREAT. one quick comment... when downloaded from shippstore it comes as a .tar file. This needs to be changed to a .exe file for it to self expand, maybe a note somewhere might help. Good luck with future exploits. THANKS AGAIN Steve Dansey

I find WXTIDE quite useful while I am at my computer, but unfortunately my system isn't portable so I have been trying to obtain data to convert to the Palm Pilot. I have been working with the Tides (v1.1) program by Ken Hancock and trying to collect jus the relevant data. I haven't been able to make the WXTIDE program generate a simple contiguous listing of data like Xtide will. For now I'll just work around the problem with a few editor macros. Good piece of work, it is much appreciated.

WXTide32 is a great program. We use it here in Dubai , United Arab Emirates to see the times which are suitable for sport fishing. The predictions of WXTide always turn out to be more accurate than the predictions published in the local newspaper. Thanks for the great program, Erik

What a great tide program! I have just downloaded the latest version and am anxious to try it out. We will be sailing with Orange Coast College again this year on SV Alaska Eagle, a 65' Sparkmans & Stevens. We meet the boat in Inverness and head for th Baltic......I will install the program on the Eagle's IBM ThinkPad that we use for Inmarsat communications. Just downloaded WXTide32. I'm glad I came across your URL in Latitude 38, as your site has a lot of good info like Equipment that worked. I didn't see mention of Horizon's make, but guess she must be a full keel design to carry 300 ft of chain and 2 4D atteries, etc. Our boat is a Crealock 34 and we carry only 180 ft due to wanting to keep the bow light enough to go over waves. Your comments on refrigeration were especially interesting, since I have been thinking of converting from Adler Barbour to a cold plate. I remember how desirable ice can be in the tropics. Downloaded WXTide32. Hope there is sufficient data to enable use in the UK! Sadly there are no UK based Free/Shareware programs due to the Admiralty's copyright on all the base data - if you want Tide Tables here - you pay for them! Secondary ports are the problem with US programs - our difference tables bear no resemblance to yours and so working out what to enter is a real headache. Will let you know how I get on. Your windows version of the Tides program works great. I cruise the Chesapeake Bay and when we go into an unfamiliar anchorage I always pull up your program before entering to see just how much water I have. The program sometimes gets AM and PM wrong whe predicting the next high tide but heck nobody's perfect. Really envy your cruising life style. Maybe someday!

This looks a bit like an Admiralty program you plug the harmonics into. I have used that one in Far East ports with good results. I will try yours too and see how it fares.

Great! Awesome! I live 2 blocks from Ocean Beach in San Francisco, and this is the best tide predictor I've seen! However, seems to have some difficulty with logic to save preferences etc. -- whether I set display prefs in the program or by editing the .cfg file, it seems to revert to its old ways, especially horiz stretch (-gstretch). Great stuff, sail on, sail on!!!!

I have had several versions of you program and enjoy observing the tides in different places around the world. I have also just completed the USCG Aux costal navigation course and used the tables and work sheets to find the tide around Newport, RI. I loaded WXTide32 this AM and it downloaded quickly and apparently correctly. I live in Garland, TX, which is a suburb of Dallas. We don't have tides on our local lakes, but I'm a member of Dallas Power and Sail Squadron, and I teach the Tides and Curre t section of our Advanced Piloting (AP) class. I was surprised and glad to see you could go back in time and make predictions. I plan to compare the predictions with WXTide32 to the long hand calculations we teach in our course. 3/13/98 I have just copied your tide table program and thank you for your generosity in making it available to the public. My wife and I have sailed many thousands of miles aboard Fortaleza in the south Pacific and spent the last year in the Pacific Northwest an Alaska. We returned from the Pacific in 1991 and spent several years in Alameda, CA. We departed Alameda in Sept. 1996 for the Northwest and returned to So. CA. to warm up this winter and prepare for our next passage.

Lots of problems with downloading the latest version of WXT32. I had no success! However, I could download the previous version using the mirror page in Germany. Prg. is working fine, now. Please, could you send me the newest version by e-mail? I am NOT a sailor, I am just interested in calculations related to astronomy and tidal predictions. So, you did good work by implementing the algorithm in Windows. Compliments! Comparing the results with the TIDE24 prg. and the official Dutch (by RIKZ) tidal predictions, in my opinion, the TIDE24 gives more accurate results. Kind regards, Hans

Well, pretty impressive. I'm fairly new to this internet stuff, having been cruising in Mexico for the last 3 years. But we had to come back & work up a few more freedom chits, so we're availing ourselves of the opportunity get our saystems & software u to date. I've used Tides24 a bit so look forward to a 32 bit upgrade along with, if the small picture is representative, outstanding graphics. I live now (and in the past) in Anchorage, AK and have checked Tides24 against the tide data published in the newspaper and it does pretty doggone good. I expect your's will as well, considering you use the same algorithm, I think. Thanks for the web site, too. We'll check back from time to time before we heasd back to the boat next October. Thank you so much for porting xtide to Windows. I use it a couple of times a day for planning runs on the beach and the next day's surf session. I set up the .cfg file to a particular location and it seems to work, but it doesn't report that location in the title bar. xtide suggestion: I need a mark for a specific time of day (vertical line typically at 6:00 a.m. for me) so I can quickly determine the day boundaries.

Just DL'd the software. Anxious to see its usefulness for the Astoria, OR area. Spend a lot of time in the area during fall/ winter hunting ducks. Tide has HUGE impact on safety and predictability of prime hunting locations. Will report back any observations.

I am a diver. I need Tide information when making dives in Tidal rivers such as the Cooper river in Charleston. This program has been very helpful for planning my dive trips.
